Installing Macintosh shareware

Stuffit Expander

You need to have a recent version of the freeware utility Stuffit Expander installed on your hard disk. If you donÆt have this (it may be in your Hard Disk:Internet:Internet Utilities:Aladdin folder), locate it on the APC CD and copy it to your desktop or another convenient location. Alternatively, download it from http://www.aladdinsys.com

Filenames ending in BIN, HQX, CPT, ZIP, or SIT (encoded/compressed files)

Follow these steps to install files with filenames ending in BIN, HQX, CPT, ZIP, or SIT. Some of these steps are applicable for installing other files as well.

1. Double-click the file icon. If you have Stuffit Expander, the file will automatically decode and decompress, resulting in a new file or folder with a related name, located in the same folder as the original file. (An HQX file may decode first to a SIT file and then to the final file, or it may decode to a SEA file û see below.)

2. If Step 1 does not result in a Stuffit Expander progress bar and eventually a new file, you may need to invoke Expander manually. To do this, drag the icon of the file onto the Stuffit Expander icon until it changes colour, then release the mouse button.

3. When decompression is complete, the original compressed file can be trashed.

4. In many cases, the new file (or the files inside the new folder) will be ready for immediate use. Sometimes, however, you will see an installer for the program.

5. Double-click the installer and follow the resulting instructions. Often you will be asked to nominate a location (folder) for the program files. Nominate your desktop or your main hard disk window, so you donÆt lose track of the new program files.

Filenames ending in SEA (self-extracting archives)

Stuffit Expander is not required to decompress these files. Just double-click the file icon and the decompression process will occur automatically. Then proceed to step 3 above.

Filenames ending in SMI (self-mounting images)

To use a self-mounting image (SMI) file, just double-click it. A progress bar will appear, after which you will find on your desktop an icon similar to that of a disk or CD. This is the ædisk imageÆ and will behave exactly as though it is a real disk or CD. Double-click it to view its contents, and copy them to your hard disk. When this has been done, both the disk image and the original SMI file can be dragged into the trash. Then proceed to step 4 above.
